Dallas is the 3rd largest city in Texas (after Houston and San Antonio), the 8th largest city in the United States, and as part of the Dallas-Fort Worth-Arlington metropolitan district, the 5th largest in the US. Dallas was founded in 1841 when Texas was still a republic by a lawyer from Tennessee, John Neely Bryan, who settled on a small bluff above the Trinity River to open a trading post and lay claim to free land. The city is thought to be named after George Mifflin Dallas, supporter of annexation of Texas and vice president under James Knox Polk.

Dallas is located in northeast Texas on the Trinity River east of Fort Worth. The area around Dallas is generally flat with numerous lakes dotting the region.

Dallas has a diversified economy. Transportation and shipping, manufacturing, finance and banking, and insurance have a significant presence here.

Generally humid with most of the annual rain falling in the spring, Dallas can experience spectacular thunderstorms during this period. Summers can be brutal, with hot, dry winds. The winters can get quite cold, and snowfall is not uncommon.

Major sports teams in the area include the Dallas Cowboys (football), the Texas Rangers (baseball), the Dallas Stars (hockey), and the Dallas Mavericks (basketball).
